SOA management and identity

SOA and Web Services management tools again – definitely a hot topic at the moment - and this time it is Digital Evolution that is offering a slightly different view of the subject, in the shape of an identity-based SOA management platform that provides multiple native integration points to identity management systems such as those from IBM and Netegrity.

The company is aiming at large enterprises exposing and deploying Web services outside the firewall to customers and partners. In such situations identity management capabilities need to become a cornerstone of any SOA, so it is pitching its Service Manager at companies looking to exploit their existing identity management systems to provide a combination of user, role, application and service identities. Traditional Web services and SOA Management solutions typically separate security and management capabilities, offering simple connectivity to identity management software without relating identity back into the management functions themselves. According to the company, this failure leads to an inability to deliver essential data and functionality to enterprises looking to scale beyond basic Web services projects to enterprise-class SOA.

Service Manager aims to close this loop by integrating with both IBM and Netegrity's identity management systems to deliver complete identity-centric audit trails. In an SOA, every user, service, and application has an identity, and every identity has security, performance, and other policies associated with it. Deploying SOAs will involve standards-based integration of identity management (IdM) and Web service management (WSM) environments. This integrates the concept of identity with all management functions, including SLAs, auditing, billing and service provisioning. For instance, it will allow users to provision access to, and performance levels of, a service according to the user and application accessing it.
