Registering governance

As if to make the point that governance is an important issue in the planning and implementation of SOA environments, Systinet has just announced the release of Systinet Registry 5.5, which the company is pitching as the centerpiece of its foundation for governance and lifecycle management.

The Business Services Registry provides a simpler, faster, and easier way to establish control of a SOA. The company suggests this is especially crucial during the transition from point-to-point Web services to reusable business services. The Registry creates the system of record for all information about business services in the SOA. It also provides lifecycle functions to enable, publish, discover, and manage business services; allows for on-demand reuse of business services; and acts as the guide in mapping business processes to SOA.
The company claims it is the first to provide an open, standards-based Business Services Registry for supporting any Web services enabled application platforms, management, and other middleware products. Based on Web services standards, businesses can enable, publish, discover and manage SOA business services across disparate, heterogeneous environments. By serving as the central "hub" of the SOA, the Business Services Registry allows companies to begin to address the governance challenges such as security, that arise as the SOA brings together previously disconnected businesses, departments, and functions.

Some of the new features built into the Registry include a configurable business service console that provides a simple user experience through the use of intuitive search and navigation tools, UI controls and portal integration features, advanced classification management that make business service views configurable, and maintainable and SOA information mapping and publishing wizards. These allow for the storing and reuse of business service policy and governance information using XML-based data standards such as XML Schema, XSLT, and WSDL.
