Mobile client collaboration

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) have announced a Memorandum of Understanding that will enable both organisations to collaborate on specifications for mobile access to the Web. The aim is to build an environment that can provide faster development, adoption, and standardisation of new features and functions for mobile devices that connect to the Web.

With a formal working relationship between them, the two organisations should be able to collaborate in a number of ways, such as exchanging of technical information and contributions. The intention is that result will benefit developers, product and service providers and others, by providing standardised technology to accelerate the development and deployment of new mobile applications and services.

Long term, this collaboration could lead to an environment which would really benefit both users and content providers, for it should bring closer the possibility of one common interface to Web-based applications, content and services regardless of the client system being used. At present, content providers have to be mindful of the differing technical demands of a number of
Client types, from Microsoft’s IE6 to a wide range of mobile environments. The upcoming September/October issue of Application Development Advisor will be looking at this specific topic.

The OMA is made up of over 350 global companies and develops interoperable mobile data service enablers that work across devices, service providers, operators, networks, and geographies. W3C develops Recommendations in widespread use in the mobile industry today, including XHTML Basic, SMIL and mobile SVG.
