buys more management Lots of companies jump and down on the SOA hype trampoline, hoping to get noticed because they have one product that maybe fits into the overall pattern of service orientation. Or perhaps they have a Web Service facilitator and now claim it makes them a leader in SOA. But the real meat of SOA, when it happens, will be found in the management software that will be running the SOA environments. And for now, that still means the big players such as HP with OpenView and Adaptive Computing, and IBM with Tivoli and its onDemand offering. And to make sure that they cover all the bases that will be needed in such an environment, neither is averse to dipping into the corporate piggy-bank to make an appropriate acquisition. That is exactly what IBM has just done with it decision to acquire Cyanea, a leading provider of software that monitors and manages the performance of Web-based business applications. Cyanea is a privately held US company with a software product that allows business applications written in Java - as well as CICS and IMS – to run faster and with less downtime across mainframe and distributed computing environments. The technology is designed to diagnose and troubleshoot problems before they affect response time. It also tracks application performance over time to help companies more intelligently plan information-technology purchases and deployments. Both of these are important management tools for the building of SOA environments. The Cyanea products will be grafted into IBM's Tivoli portfolio, and will be integrated into IBM's middleware portfolio in several key areas. These include Tivoli, where it is expected to enhance end-to-end business transaction monitoring capabilities, zSeries performance and application monitoring capabilities. With WebSphere, it will provide troubleshooting capabilities throughout the application lifecycle for areas such as memory management and transaction problems. Lastly with Rational, Cyanea capabilities will provide deeper application performance analysis capabilities to WebSphere developers, both for distributed and host-based WebSphere instances. www.ibm.com/ondemand |
