Here comes Oracle

A small and all-but unnoticed acquisition - of Collaxa Inc by Oracle - looks to have ended up as a key part in the latter's attempt to break into at least the SOA Hype Stakes. The former's technology, in the area of Business Process Management (BPM), is set to be at the heart of Oracle's new BPEL Process Manager. BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) is a new standard supported by Microsoft Corp., IBM, SAP AG and BEA Systems. It provides the framework for orchestrating discrete services into business processes.

The SOA Hype Stakes are now well and truly underway. A few months ago SAP, arguably the world's largest business applications provider, announced plans develop a three-year programme to develop an SOA environment. This will incorporate SAP's NetWeaver integration platform and a componentisation of SAP's ERP (enterprise resource planning) applications. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that Oracle has made a declaration as well, or that its offering is to be built around an acquisition. The idea is that by using the Collaxa-sourced Oracle BPEL Process Manager and Oracle Application Server 10g together, users can utilise Web services for integration.
