BEA goes applications-specific

One thing that the SOA and Web Services approach is bound to generate is the growth in applications-specific solutions. Basically, if there is a market big enough, some company will build a specific solution to fill the need and save vast amounts of development time across a wide swathe of enterprises. As an example, how about the telecoms business?

That is exactly the market BEA Systems has targeted with the announcement of a new set of products, formerly code-named Project Da Vinci, and now known as the BEA WebLogic Communications Platform. This is an integrated, standards-based suite of products and technologies developed to help telecommunications companies deliver and manage converged voice, data, video and mobile services such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP), email, calendaring, peer-to-peer services, and a wide variety of digital content and video services over wireless and wireline networks. The first part of this package, the WebLogic SIP Server, is now available.

As well as the WebLogic SIP Server with integrated Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) support for establishing a communication path between two or more entities, the package also incorporates WebLogic Network Gatekeeper. This is currently under development and is being designed to allow carriers to define, manage and enforce access and quality of service (QoS) parameters for network resources. www.bea.com/wlcom
